Riga to become more cyclist friendly, "Rīgas satiksme" to install more bicycle parking racks in Latvian capital

As cycling season starts, "Rīgas satiksme" will restore the bicycle parking racks that we dismantled in winter months.

In the nearest days seven bicycle parking racks will be restored in seven places: in Audēju Street (at the crossing with Vaļņu Street), in Blaumaņa Street (at the crossing with K.Barona Street), in Dzirnavu Street (at the crossing with Skolas Street), in Brīvības Street (at the crossing with Matīsa Street), in Ģertrūdes Street (at the crossing with Brīvības Street), in Elizabetes Street (at the crossing with Tērbatas Street), in Merķeļa Street (at the crossing with Brīvības Street).

Until the beginning of summer, SIA "Rīgas satiksme" plan to organize 10 new bicycle parking places in the capital city. Their location will be determined following recommendations of cyclists, therefore Riga City Council calls on cyclists and other participants of road traffic to be active in the coming weeks and to send their recommendations to sd@riga.lv or to the Twitter account of Riga City Council’s Transport Department at @rdsvd.

As reported earlier, today Riga Vice-Mayor Andris Ameriks invited experts, officials and cyclists to discuss topical issues of bicycle traffic in Riga as the cycling season starts.

At the meeting, they discussed the possibility of organizing recommended traffic lanes for bicycles in streets, the cyclists also called for a more active solution of bicycle parking issue, restoring of surfacing and painting of cycling tracks, as well as continuing to improve the urban infrastructure, including the planning of new cyclist tracks, which would make bicycle traffic in Riga streets easier. It’s planned that after Easter Riga City Council will establish a working group including municipality representatives and cyclists to solve the issues raised at today’s discussion.
